In the next five years, the Kingdom of Cambodia will build or renovate six airports to meet the travel needs of domestic and foreign tourists and ease the pressure on airport operations.

This is the news disclosed by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation of Cambodia on the 11th. In an interview with the media, the spokesperson of the department and the deputy director of the General Administration of Technology, Sinzhan Siriwitha, said that the newly built or repaired airports are located in Phnom Penh City, Siem Reap Province, Qisinghai City, Putei Meanchey Province, and a place in the northeastern provinces. Royal Army Airport is also among the new ones. Airports in the northeastern provinces will be located in Shangding Province, Mondulkiri Province or Rattanakiri Province.

The Cambodian government needs to invest 3.748 billion US dollars in the entire project, and the government plans to cooperate with private enterprises to promote and support the long-term development of the Cambodian economy, improve the competitiveness of cargo and passenger air transportation, and implement a modern management system for the new and repaired airports.

At present, the three major airports in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Westport have more than 100 daily flights, according to Sinzhan Siriwita. Cambodia now has more than 40 airlines in operation, with a growth rate of 16%. The existing airport is about to enter overcapacity and cannot handle the capacity of 30 million traffic counting per year by 2030.

Last year, more than 100,000 flights took off and landed in Cambodia, carrying 10.50 million passengers and carrying 70,000 tons of cargo.
